The biopic tells the true story of a high school football coach fired for publicly praying after games.
Retired Marine Joe Kennedy was in the headlines for several years after he lost his job in Washington State for praying at midfield after school football games. Ultimately vindicated by the United States Supreme Court in 2022, his story is coming to the silver screen this fall.
Average Joe has good talent both in front of and behind the camera, too. Harold Cronk, who directed God's Not Dead, God's Not Dead 2, and Unbroken: Path to Redemption, directed this picture, calling it "an honor to bring Coach Kennedy's powerful story to life on the big screen." Christian actor Eric Close (Nashville, multiple Hallmark Christmas movies, and The Mulligan) and Amy Acker (Person of Interest, The Gifted, and Ordinary Angels) lead the way in the cast playing the coach and his wife, Denise, respectively.
As you will see in the trailer below, the movie delves heavily not only into Kennedy's fight for his right to pray after games, but also into his younger years as a boy and a young man in the Marine Corps. It also employs a rather unconventional device, with characters looking straight into the camera and directly addressing the audience.
Average Joe is scheduled to be a limited release, rolling out on October 10th and running through the 17th. You can purchase tickets to a theater in your area via this link to the website of distributor Fathom Events.
