Updated: Jan 19

Christian filmmaker Jon Erwin is behind the new outfit and he is teaming up with Amazon for this series about Israel's greatest monarch.

Clearly at the top of his game, with films like Jesus Revolution, I Still Believe, and I Can Only Imagine to his name in recent years, Christian director and producer Jon Erwin is going big for his first series. The Wonder Project studio, founded by the Alabama native, will combine forces with Amazon MGM Studios for its inaugural offering, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

House of David is a historical drama based on an idea from Erwin, who will serve as the executive producer of the show, which will stream on Amazon Prime Video when it releases. A synopsis from that service states that the program "follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. A prophet prepares to overthrow him - anointing the outcast shepherd boy David as a second king."

There is no word yet on when it will come out or how many episodes will comprise the first season, but we have little doubt that it will hold true to the Biblical narrative of King David's life in light of Erwin's bona fides in the faith-based genre and his devotion to Christ. His partner at The Wonder Project, which we reported on when it launched at the end of last year, is CEO Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, a fellow Believer and former executive at Netflix and YouTube; Dallas Jenkins - the creator of The Chosen - is a major shareholder and adviser as well.

In a statement announcing the production, Amazon MGM Studios' boss for TV, Vernon Sanders, says he and his team are "excited about the scope, scale and storytelling" of House of David, adding that they were impressed by The Wonder Project's "ambition to nurture universal stories of love, triumph and spirituality." Hoogstraten, too, praised the new partnership with the streaming giant.

"Our goal at The Wonder Project is to tell stories that restore faith in things worth believing in, and to do this at scale. We've been blown away by Amazon's commitment to help us do this - both through the significant resources they are dedicating and their trust in us to tell these stories authentically to our audience."

No word yet on casting, but the series will be produced together with Kingdom Story Company, which Erwin founded with his brother Andrew in partnership with Lionsgate studio, another co-producer of this project. Christian Film Blog will follow developments tied to House of David and bring you updates as we get them.
