Upcoming Releases - 2019: "Breakthrough" Does Exactly That

The trailer for this Christian film generates a whopping 30 million views on social media in just 48 hours, breaking through records!

Produced by faith-based film heavyweight Devon Franklin (Miracles from Heaven, The Star), with professional basketball player and strong believer Stephen Curry onboard as executive producer, Breakthrough stars Chrissy Metz and Topher Grace. It tells a miraculous true story you may well remember because it got so much news coverage when it happened in 2015.

John Smith, a 14 year old Missouri boy, was walking on a frozen lake with friends when the ice gave way beneath them. Quickly overcome by the frigid water, John sank to the bottom, laying there for nearly 15 minutes before he was rescued and rushed to the hospital. For a further 40 minutes, he had no heartbeat.

Doctors were prepared to pronounce his time of death. But when his mother Joyce, who is played in the film by Metz, was called into the room, she began to pray loudly, begging the Lord to restore her son to life. To the shock and amazement of all present, John's heart began to beat again.

The physician who worked on John, Dr. Kent Sutterer, later said it was clear there was "no scientific basis" for it and that it was a miracle from God.

"His heart was jump started by the Holy Spirit listening to the request of his praying mother."

This story is reminiscent of the miracle Jesus worked (Luke 7:11-16) in the town of Nain, where He raised from the dead the son of the widow. While the circumstances and details differ, these two events, though separated by millenia, seem tied by the common thread of God's merciful love and miraculous power, which give redemptive hope to those who believe in Him.

Judging by the trailer, Breakthrough appears to capture that sense of Christian hope. The film is due in theaters next Easter.
