The Christian film benefits at the weekend box office from a jump in its theater count.
Overcomer took in $3.7 million from Friday through Sunday, according to Box Office Mojo, putting it in 6th place overall. And an additional 326 theaters certainly helped the movie, which is in now wrapping up its third weekend in release with a total of 2,153 theaters. That's still well short of the tallies for the Top-5 finishers, but it's a solid number for a faith-based film.
From the brother team of Stephen Kendrick and Alex Kendrick, this picture focuses on the importance of Believers' finding their identity in Christ and it features a strong message of forgiveness, redemption and love. The cast includes many Christians, including Aryn Wright-Thompson, Priscilla Shirer, Shari Rigby, Cameron Arnett and Alex Kendrick, who also directed the picture and co-wrote the script with Stephen.
Shot on a budget of $5 million, Overcomer has already earned $24.6 million in domestic revenue, which puts it at number 22 on the all-time box office list in the Christian genre.
