The Passion of the Christ became far and away the biggest box office hit in the Christian genre when released in theaters back in 2004, and anticipation for the follow-up has been building ever since. Now comes word that The Resurrection of the Christ will be comprised of two movies: Part One and Part Two.

Director Mel Gibson is to team up again with lead actor Jim Caviezel, who will reprise his role as the Savior, the part he played in the original movie, which brought in a massive $612 million in global theatrical revenue. As Christian Film Blog previously reported, they plan to begin production in Italy as early as this month.

The film will not just cover the Resurrection and Christ's remaining time on earth until his Ascension into heaven. As Gibson stated earlier this year, "in order to tell the story properly you need to start with the fall of the angels," meaning the picture's narrative will be quite expansive, naturally lending itself to two parts.

As it now stands, according to Deadline magazine, the plan is to release both of them in 2027, with distributor Lionsgate rolling out the first installment in theaters on Good Friday, which falls on March 26th. The second part will come 40 days later, on May 6th, which is Ascension Day. In the meantime, we will keep track of developments and bring you updates as we get them.
