Sound of Freedom goes from strength to strength, not only claiming second place at the box office over the weekend, but also improving on its total ticket sales, bringing in a whopping $27.2 million from Friday through Sunday, according to figures from The Numbers website. As if that were not impressive enough, the revenue is a 38% increase from the $19.6 million it made in its inaugural weekend.

The film - which stars Jim Caviezel and Mira Sorvino and tells the true story of a Department of Homeland Security official who steps down so he can devote himself to the fight against child sex trafficking - benefited in part from a jump in the number of theaters showing it: now 3,265, which is up 313 from a week earlier. But it is also the beneficiary of strong word-of-mouth advertising, having earned a rare A+ rating from opening-night audiences surveyed by CinemaScore.

Sound of Freedom, an independent movie distributed by Angel Studios, has so far brought in more than $85 million total at the domestic box office, which is a particularly impressive figure for a faith-based film: you can count on one hand the movies in the genre that have crossed that threshold. Considering the picture is just 13 days into its theatrical release, it is certain to go much higher, with the next significant milestone being $100 million in ticket revenue, which almost certainly will come this week.
