Updated: Sep 1, 2023

The faith-based movie joins a particularly limited number of pictures in the genre in that exclusive club.

Wow, talk about a box-office juggernaut, in just 16 days, Sound of Freedom has done what only a handful of other Christian films have ever managed to do. According to The Numbers website, it brought in $4.7 million at theaters yesterday, pushing the picture's total revenue haul thus far to $100.9 million in North America.

That puts it in rarified territory, because only four other films in the genre have gone over the century mark at the box office: The Passion of the Christ and the three Chronicles of Narnia movies. When one considers that those latter films are all allegorical in nature, and thus not obviously faith-based, the achievement of Sound of Freedom is all the more impressive.

The movie stars Jim Caviezel and Mira Sorvino and is based on the life story of Tim Ballard, a former Department of Homeland Security official who left his government post to dedicate himself to fighting against the child sex trade. Completed in 2018, Sound of Freedom was put on the shelf for years by The Walt Disney Company, which evidently was not supportive of its subject matter. The filmmakers were eventually able to buy back the rights and ultimately distributed it through Utah-based Angel Studios.
