One Month to "Overcomer"

This is the next picture from the Kendrick Brothers, the leading filmmaking team in the Christian genre.

Overcomer is the sixth feature film from Alex Kendrick and Stephen Kendrick, who, in keeping with tradition, co-wrote the screenplay. Alex also directed the movie and plays the lead part in this faith-based picture, which focuses on finding our identity in Christ.

His character, John Harrison, is a successful high school basketball coach whose world is turned upside down when he loses most of his team's top players because of financial hardship in their town. Having placed much of his identity in his job, that setback prompts him to question his self-worth.

The supporting cast is a good one, and features three strong Christian actors: Cameron Arnett, Shari Rigby and Priscilla Shirer. And in her big screen debut, teenager Aryn Wright Thompson plays a runner on the school cross country team who helps Alex Kendrick's character refocus on God.

Stephen Kendrick, who in addition to being co-writer is also a producer on this one, said previously that Overcomer is their biggest budget production to date. Though he did not name a figure, it must be north of $3 million since that's what it cost to make the previous Kendrick Brothers' film, War Room. That one, which also starred Shirer, went on to gross $67 million at the U.S. box office, so anticipation is high for this latest endeavor.

Overcomer is expected to open in approximately 1,500 theaters when it debuts nationwide on August 23rd, so mark your calendars. In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
