Dallas Jenkins, lead actor Jonathan Roumie, and the rest of the cast and crew of The Chosen have set up shop in Italy, where they are shooting some of the most important scenes of this series, including the Crucifixion. All seven episodes of the next season, in fact, are to play out on the day of Christ's death.

Jenkins, the creator and director of the show, launched production of Season 6 in Texas back in April, as we reported at the time. He then shot additional scenes in Utah as well, using the two places he has for several seasons now.

In a weekend livestream for fans, however, the 49-year-old husband and father of four children stated that he wanted to shoot the Crucifixion - and related moments like Jesus' suffering at the hands of Roman soldiers - in Italy because it "is one of the few places that has a backdrop that looks like the first century, and we couldn't really recreate that in Utah or Texas."

"The backdrop that you're going to see during the Crucifixion scenes is really extraordinary. And we didn't want to use a blue screen or a lot of CGI and visual effects for this. We want it to be as authentic as possible. So, we're going to be spending the month of June here."

The committed Christian did not mention where in Italy the work is taking place, but he did share clips showing ancient stone buildings, walls, and walkways that have been turned into sets. The livestream also featured a hillside where crosses had been erected for the fateful scene of Jesus' death, which will be portrayed in a particularly unique way, according to Jenkins.

"We make sure that this is the telling of the entire story of history, from creation to the fall of man, to death entering the world, to Passover...we introduce to you how all of those things are relevant to the Crucifixion story."

He also provided an update on the tentative 2026 release schedule for Season 6, saying that the first six episodes will come out later than has been customary in the past: in the second half of the year. There will not be eight episodes either, as has been the case with all the previous seasons, but seven this time around. And that final one will release simultaneously in movie theaters around the world and in multiple languages, but not until sometime by March of 2027. The director added, though, that it will be worth the wait.

"This is going to be a global event and we're going all in on the production, and we're going all in on the marketing, and all in on the languages to create a global theatrical event."

Christian Film Blog will continue to follow developments and bring you updates as we get them. In the meantime, after a successful run in theaters, Season 5 will release exclusively on Amazon's Prime Video streaming platform this coming weekend, and we will put up an article with all the details in the coming days. Oh, and you can check out the aforementioned livestream below, which will allow you to watch the first episode of Season 5, although only for the next couple of days.
