Good Mother's Day Weekend for "Breakthrough"

This Christian film about the love and devotion of a mother finishes in the Top-10 at the box office.

Josh Lucas and Chrissy Metz in a scene from "Breakthrough."

Breakthrough wrapped up its fourth weekend in release with an eighth place finish at the box office, earning $2.57 million, according to estimates from The Numbers. That gives it a total haul of $37.2 million thus far against a production budget of $14 million.

That is a good start for this film from Christian producer DeVon Franklin, but the pace is likely to slow considerably from this point forward. It played in about 1,900 theaters over the weekend, down 1,000 from its peak a couple of weeks ago, and as that downward trend continues, it will take the box office revenue with it.

Breakthrough tells the true story of a boy who drowned in an icy lake and was brought back to life when his mother prayed for God to restore him. It features a strong cast, including Chrissy Metz, Topher Grace, Josh Lucas, Marcel Ruiz and Mike Colter, and also has a powerful soundtrack that includes a host of Grammy-winning performers like country music star Carrie Underwood and Christian rapper Lecrae.
