The hit show about the earthly ministry of Jesus is currently filming Season 6, which "most likely" will come out next year.

If you missed the fifth season of The Chosen in theaters, you will not have to wait much longer to catch it through streaming, assuming that is that you have access to Amazon's Prime Video. Starting sometime in June and continuing for 90-days, that subscription-based platform will be the exclusive outlet in the United States for the eight-episode season; the exact release date should be announced this Friday.

After the three-month window of exclusivity, Season 5 will become available for free to all via the show's app. Internationally, the release plan will vary since numerous streamers plan to host the show, but generally speaking, it will roll out overseas in July.

All of this information comes courtesy of Dallas Jenkins, the creator and director of The Chosen, who shared it in a livestream last night. He also got into some of the details about Season 6, which takes place on the day of Christ's crucifixion and is currently being filmed at the show's home studio in Midlothian, Texas. The 49-year-old Christian filmmaker stated that the new season is quite a challenge production-wise.

"Season 6 is going to take us longer to film than any season we've ever done by far, so that of course then pushes the post-production process as well."

And that reality led Jenkins to tell viewers of the livestream that he consequently does not yet know when the sixth season will release. He stated that he is hopeful "it will come out most likely sometime next year," adding, however, that "it won't be early." That season will also release the first six episodes via streaming - presumably exclusively on Prime Video - before sometime later putting out the last two episodes together in a finale, "which is going to be a global theatrical event."

The director added that the program's partners at the Come and See foundation - the charitable organization that crowdfunds the show - have thus far covered the costs of five of the eight episodes of Season 6 and have nearly raised the money needed for episode six as well. That means the final two episodes must still be paid for to a tune of $7 million each: Jenkins said the foundation gave him assurances that will happen on schedule.
