Nominees are in for the Movieguide Awards

Updated: Jan 17, 2019

Which Christian films are in the running for top honors?

Movieguide is an organization that has been rating movies from a Christian perspective since 1985, and the 2019 Movieguide Awards show is the 27th edition. Not surprisingly, all of the biggest Christian films from last year are up for the top honor - The Epiphany Prize - for the most inspiring movie of the year.

Those four films are: God's Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness; I Can Only Imagine; Paul - Apostle of Christ; and Unbroken: Path to Redemption. These are all top-notch movies - each generated more than $5.5 million at the box office - that stay true to a Gospel-focused message. Any of them would be a worthy choice for the award.

There is a fifth nominee in the category: the latest animated iteration of Dr. Seuss' The Grinch. Though not a Christian film, it does tell a heartwarming Christmas tale and even features some carols focusing on the birth of Jesus. The movie was an enormous commercial success, too, bringing in more than half a billion dollars globally. It nevertheless strikes Christian Film Blog as out of place alongside the other four films.

There are also awards to be won in other categories, including most inspiring TV show and most inspiring performances in both television and film. Among those up for consideration in the latter category are prominent Christian actors David A.R. White, for his performance in God's Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness, and Jim Caviezel, for the role of Luke in Paul, Apostle of Christ.
