The Christian actor calls government-run schools "public enemy number one," adding it's up to parents "to cultivate the hearts, and minds, and souls" of their children.

Never one to shy away from controversy, Kirk Cameron is casting aspersions at America's public school system. The sharp rhetoric comes in the launch of a promotional campaign for his new documentary, The Homeschool Awakening.

A synopsis for the film promises it will delve "into the adventures of dynamic American families on a mission to put fun and faith back into learning," as the Trinity Broadcast Network host and former star of Growing Pains and the Christian hit movie Fireproof explores the ins-and-outs of homeschooling.

In a recent social media post announcing the documentary, the 51-year-old father of six children who were homeschooled makes clear that the dramatic growth of the homeschooling movement is not happening in a vacuum, accusing the nation's public schools of falling down on the job by teaching things to pupils that he calls both "inaccurate" and "immoral." Adding that he cares deeply about children, Cameron holds nothing back in his charges against government-run education.

"It's up to us as parents to cultivate the hearts, and minds, and souls of our children toward what is good, what is right, beautiful and true. And the public school system, unfortunately, has not been working with us, but actively working against us. In my opinion, the public school system has become public enemy number one."

Cameron says he is very passionate about this issue - believing that whoever controls education controls the future - and has been working for two and a half years on the film, which his production company Camfam Studios put together with Christian television network TBN. In the documentary, he profiles homeschooled students and their parents, juxtaposing their views on education against those of politicians and leftist activists who support government controlled public schools.

The Homeschool Awakening will play in theaters nationwide in a limited two-day engagement from Fathom Events on June 13th and 14th. This link to that company's website will show you where you can watch it in your area and allow you to watch the trailer to get a better feel for the film.
