The Erwin Brothers' film is among the nominees for this year's K-LOVE Fan Awards.
American Underdog, the top grossing faith-based movie at the box office so far this year, is a nominee at the fan-selected awards show put on by Christian radio network K-LOVE. Most of the categories, not surprisingly, are related to music, but this movie is one of five contestants in the Film/Television Impact category.
The biopic tells the true story Christian athlete Kurt Warner, a football player who despite going undrafted out of college eventually won a Super Bowl and earned a spot in the professional football Hall of Fame. Co-directed by the brother duo of Andrew Erwin and Jon Erwin, it stars Zachary Levi as Warner and features Anna Paquin and Dennis Quaid in the other principal roles.
This is the second feature from the Erwins - among the top filmmakers in the Christian genre - under their partnership deal with Lionsgate studio and it generated $26.5 million during its theatrical run from last Christmas into February. It is also one of two movies the Alabama brothers have in the K-LOVE Fan Awards this year, the other being their documentary The Jesus Music, which tracks the rise of Christian contemporary music.
There are five total nominees, including two other documentaries - Pastor Tony Evans' Journey with Jesus, and The Case for Heaven from author Lee Strobel - and one other feature, which also stars Dennis Quaid: Blue Miracle. The actual event takes place at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, TN on May 29th and it will air on Trinity Broadcasting Network on June 3rd at 8:00 PM EDT.
