This faith-based production turns in strong numbers despite playing in fewer than half as many theaters as the competition.
The only weekend of the theatrical release of Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers is in the books, and the team behind the project has got to be pleased. It claimed fourth place for box office revenue, bringing in $4.1 million from Friday through Sunday, according to preliminary figures from The Numbers website.
An animated picture from Walt Disney called Encanto claimed the top spot with $12.7 million, followed by Ghostbusters: Afterlife and House of Gucci with $10.3 million and $6.7 million, respectively. It is worth pointing out, however, that the Christmas special from The Chosen - the multi-season series about Jesus' earthly ministry - played in just 1,700 theaters, compared to 3,980 for Encanto, more than 4,000 for Ghostbusters and 3,477 for the Gucci biopic.
Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers claimed the top spot at the box office when it debuted on Wednesday, as we reported here, and duplicated the feat on Thursday. Thus far, it has generated $9 million and still has five days to go before wrapping up its run on the big screen on December 10th.
The production features a new episode of the hit streaming show, telling the Nativity story through the eyes of Mary and Joseph. It then transitions into a musical event featuring 13 prominent Christian acts singing both new and traditional Christmas songs. You can still get tickets at a theater near you via this link to Fathom Events, the film's theatrical distributor.
